10/4/2023 0 Comments Week two: first attemptsWe met up Tuesday night and started the base of the projects. We headed over to Lila’s house after practice and started by videoing the ideal skills. Then we had the other person make a first attempt. We did this with our two main skills leaving the reach skills for the future. There was one small bump in the road when we realized that the rec center closed at six, which was when we both got out of practice. So we last minute moved to Lila’s basement and various locations around her house. There happened to be a lot of moving furniture but that's ok we made it work. We have plans to meet again in two weeks to review progress and continue teaching. Cheer:As a reminder the skills selected for Lila to learn were a back walkover and an aerial. After all of the first attempts we started the teaching process. For back walkovers Alyssa started by demonstrating the proper technique. Then she had Lila practice her back bend kick out until she had that pretty solid. Then Lila did the back walkover with a spotter a couple times. The back walkover made a lot of progress so hopefully she will get it soon. Then we started on the aerial. Alyssa taught the prep and then had Lila try it. We then did cartwheel pop ups. The aerial will probably take a lot more work. Alyssa gave Lila exercises to practice before we met again. Dance:The skills selected for Alyssa to learn were turns in second and a calypso. Whenever Lila started teaching she started with the basis of turning. Spotting is how people make it around in turns. It is basically where you need to keep your focus at one point in front of you at all times. Your eyes should never leave it. So we started by practicing this. Then we went over basic prep of a turn and practiced that for a while. Then she practiced the first turn. Then we started calypsos, this started by learning the prep. Then Lila taught the basics of the jump portion. The best way to get a calypso is to practice it so that’s what Alyssa did.

9/27/2023 1 Comment Week One: Project PitchWe had both already heard about Genius hour coming into Mr.Barkers class. Upperclassmen on our respective teams had told us the many stories about what they did and how some loved or hated it. So when he pitched the idea our minds went to our sports. The next day in AP world we were discussing that we wanted to do something with our sports and then the idea to teach each other skills popped into our heads. Obviously we are both beginners at the others sports so we both went home and figured out some cool attainable skills to teach the other person. Alyssa chose for Lila to learn an Ariel and a back walk over. These are skills she is very confident that Lila can get but she would love for Lila to get a back handspring so that is a reach goal. Lila had some ideas for Alyssa when Alyssa asked to learn Maddie turns. Alyssa was referring to Maddie Ziegler from the reality TV show Dance Moms signature turns. The technical dance term for those turns is turns in second. With this request in mind Lila chose for Alyssa to learn turns in second and a clyspo. The reach skill that Lila picked for Alyssa is a flying disc. We are planning to meet up every two weeks at either the old high school dance room, Lila's dance studio, or Alyssa's house. We will start by demonstrating the skill and then have the other person make a first attempt. Then we will start to teach the skill. Then over the two weeks, we will work on them by ourselves. Then we will meet back up and continue with the skills. We will be videoing our progress throughout and then make a montage of us mastering the skills.
